What’s happening at Toronto Pride?

29 May

It’s getting hot in here….

The recent unrest about happenings at Pride Toronto leave me questioning how far we have come from our roots.

Pride parades began because of discrimination and injustice. They marked a turning point in visibility and demanding equal rights.

We are fortunate to live in a city and a country where those struggles have come so far. But it seems to me that the obvious “bigger” wins have obscured the (still) necessary struggles against oppression. Sadly, that oppression is coming from within the organization.

Recent events – Blockorama, moving the Dyke March, and now the censorship of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid – all signal to me a lack of awareness, and a questionable commitment to the community.

That makes me sad, and angry.

On the other hand, I am pleased to see our communities on their feet, voices raised in protest, reclaiming Pride.

It’s getting hot in here….but maybe that’s just what we need to remember that the work is not done.
